Gyeongsan-si belongs to the southern continent type climate region and is close to the Daegu special type. The southern continent type climate region, which is sandwiched between Taebaek Mountains and Sobaek Mountains, has little annual precipitation, the highest temperature in summer, and a large annual temperature range due to its basin’s regional traits. These phenomena more noticeably show up in the basin along Geumho River.
- Gyeongsan-si belongs to a region where it rains frequently but weakly compared with South Korea’s annual rainfall, mainly arising from its geographic traits.
- In other words, while most of the rainfall in South Korea is cyclonic precipitation, the low pressure originates from the Chinese continent and East China Sea, moves towards the east, and brings much rain to Seosa-myeon in Sobaek Mountains and the southern waterfront in the process, by which humid wind from the South and Yellow Sea flocks into the center of the low pressure, making those areas the upper wind side.
- By the time the low pressure goes over Sobaek Mountains and arrives in Gyeongsangbuk-do, however, it has already lost much humidity and becomes the lower wind side, leading to a drop in rainfall.
- Moreover, when atmospheric pressure is formed in a northeast air stream in winter, the humid and damp northeast wind from East Sea comes ashore near Gangneung and Sokcho, and when it comes to Gyeongsangbuk-do, it becomes an arid wind after going over Taebaek Mountains, causing a drop in precipitation.
